Trustees and Advisors

Lord_Mawson_OBE.jpgLord Mawson OBE - President. Andrew's career in the social sector has spanned over 30 years. Before founding Community Action Network (CAN) in 1998, he developed the renowned Bromley-by-Bow Centre, which became the UK's first Healthy Living Centre. Andrew then helped to found Poplar Harca (one of the first housing companies) and Leaside Regeneration Ltd.

Andrew is now the director of Andrew Mawson Partnerships and the best selling author of the book, The Social Entrepreneur: Making Communities Work. Recently, he launched the Water City Group to create and implement a vision for East London revitalised by the opportunities of the 21st Century and the 2012 Olympic Games.

Andrew received an OBE for his work at Bromley and was made a life Peer in 2007. Andrew is also a Non-Stipendiary Minister in the United Reformed Church.

Management

Susan Mawson is Andrew’s wife and the manager of Stanton. She has worked at the Stanton Guildhouse for nearly 6 years having previously run hospitality at the Bromley-by-Bow Centre for many years. Susan will help you with any enquiry and will ensure that your stay is tailor-made to suit your needs and make your visit a very special one. Susan and Andrew’s youngest son goes to the local primary school in the Cotswolds.

Jenny Proctor is the housekeeper at Stanton. She has worked with the team for many years helping to organise visits and ensuring that all our guests feel welcome and at home! The house showcases Jenny’s attention to small details – it is carefully designed and decorated with beautiful furnishings and unique artwork.

Elon Newton is Stanton’s business manager and marketing director. He has been instrumental in building Stanton into a high-profile centre for select conferences. Elon and the team work hard to make ensure that Stanton retains the individuality and welcoming atmosphere that it is well known for. Under Elon’s guidance, the Centre seeks to encourage and strengthen its links with local businesses and enterprises.

Colin_Bayley.jpgColin Bayley – Advisor.
Colin is board member and secretary of One Church 100 Uses and business manager of Andrew Mawson Partnerships.  His project work includes the St Paul's Way Transformational Project: a ground breaking regeneration project in London's East End.

Colin has 30 years business experience having worked for major international companies and leading professional services firms. He was a marketing director at global accountants Arthur Andersen and business development director at international lawyers Stephenson Harwood. Previously, Colin was managing director of three leading London public relations consultancies. At Booker plc., he was responsible for the Booker Prize for Fiction.

Colin has helped to launch a successful programme of social enterprise in schools. He has twice been churchwarden of his parish church, where he led both fundraising for a new church centre and the refurbishment of the Victorian church interior. He is a long serving chair of Governors of his local Church of England Primary School.

David_Boyd.jpgDavid Boyd - Trustee.
David brings to the Guildhouse more than 30 years' experience of being a Trustee for social enterprises and community organisations primarily concerned with children, education and health issues. He is a former chairman of the Bromley by Bow Centre and of the Children's Legal Centre. David is a practising barrister who has previously worked for the National Youth Bureau and the National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders. He is a school governor and a part-time Mental Health Review Tribunal Judge. Among his interests and hobbies David lists recreational reading and writing; music; pictures; and collecting pottery.

Paul Brickell – Advisor.

Paul is Chief Executive of Leaside Regeneration, a social enterprise set up to develop and deliver a vision for the regeneration of the Lower Lea Valley and the surrounding area in East London. Leaside managed the design and development of the £10m Langdon Park DLR Station in Poplar, winner of a number of design awards for regeneration. Leaside also managed the building of Roach Bridge in Fish Island providing access to a previously isolated area. It is currently working on two similar projects.

Paul started his regeneration work in Bromley-by-Bow and created a partnership between Poplar HARCA and Leaside Regeneration. Paul prepared and won a £20 million bid on their behalf. Before his work on regeneration, Paul was a university professor and a molecular biologist and until 2002 ran the cancer research department at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He has published more than 120 peer reviewed research papers and articles. Paul holds a PhD from Cambridge.

Frank_Creber.jpgFrank Creber – Trustee.
Frank is the Creative Director at the celebrated Bromley by Bow Centre where he was one of the founding artists in 1986. He was trained at University of Newcastle upon Tyne (B.A. in Painting 1981) and Chelsea College of Art (M.A. in Painting 1987). Frank has collected a number of prestigious awards: the Herbert Read Fellowship at Chelsea, Barclays Bank Young Painters Award and the Pickering Fellowship at Kingston. In 2005, Frank was appointed the official artist in residence until 2012 for Water City, and in 2009, began working alongside Michael Bochmann as co-artistic directors of the Water City Arts Festival.

Sam_Everington.jpgDr Sam Everington MBBS, MRCGP, Barrister, OBE - Trustee.
Sam is a GP in the East End of London’s Bromley by Bow Centre. The Centre is used by the Government as a model for “healthy living centres” and NHS Lift premises. Sam is a qualified Barrister and a member of BMA and GMC Council. In 1999, he received an OBE for services to inner city primary care and, in 2006, the International Award of Excellence in Health Care. He is a Director of Community Health Partnerships (NHS Lift) and an Ambassador for Social Enterprise (Social Enterprise Coalition/Cabinet Office initiative). In 2007-8 Sam was appointed Adviser to the Health Minister (Primary Care Access) and was a member of the Department of Health Art and Health Working party in 2006.

Donald_Findley.jpgDonald Findley – Trustee.
Donald's background as a scientist yields a perceptive analysis, which compliments 20 years in community and economic development. A classic social entrepreneur, he enjoys a challenge and can call on a very broad range of skills to deliver the goods.

Donald created and then implemented systems to organise and report on 10 European programmes (both ESF and ERDF), 3 large Lottery projects and an entire SRB Programme. He has also overseen over 100 grants from Trusts and Corporates. This amounts to some £30m.  Donald played a central role in transforming the Bromley-by-Bow Centre. He also managed the construction of a £1.5m Healthy Living Centre.

In 2000, Donald joined CAN as a Director of Finance and Development and was part of a core team that developed the successful UnLtd £100m bid to the Millennium Commission. Donald was then seconded to the London Development Agency(LDA) as an advisor on Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Enterprise. He is one of the founding Directors of Community Interest Company One Church, 100 Uses.

Robert_Trimble.jpgRobert Trimble – Advisor.
Rob is the Chief Executive of the Bromley by Bow Centre. Rob was awarded Business in the Community’s Sieff Award for outstanding leadership in 2008. The award is in recognition of his work in developing the Bromley by Bow Centre as a national exemplar in the areas of health, social care, adult learning and social enterprise in a deprived community. Rob became Chief Executive of the Centre in 2002. This followed a fourteen year career in the private sector. In addition to his responsibilities at the Bromley by Bow Centre is also a Director of the Creative Industries Development Agency and a Trustee of Action for Bow (managing a community and economic regeneration endowment fund) and Streets of Growth (youth development charity).
